English rowers from the town Henley on the Thames decided to wear a rather unconventional shirt. This collarless shirt with a buttoned front placket caused heads to turn because all shirts, including undershirts, had collars. At first this strange looking shirt was referred to as an under vest.
Maybe this collarless shirt would have been forgotten as a team shirt for the rowers of Henley on the Thames if not for a rowing tradition. When a rowing team came up short and lost the competition they would literally “lose their shirts” and give them over to the victors. This allowed the custom logo Henley team shirts to circulate and be copied.
A few decades later a new sport recognized the comfort and ease of the custom embroidered Henley. Many of the early baseball teams wore shirts with a similar look and cut.
Time moves on and styles change and the custom logo Henley was almost forgotten if not for a well-known fashion designer. Michael Gross reports in his book Genuine Authentic: The Real Life of Ralph Lauren that Lauren saw a vintage rower’s shirt and proclaimed it a new style of shirt. The reintroduction of the collarless shirt with a short front buttoned placket brought it back in a big way. Now the Henley is one of the most popular styles and a great place to put your sport logo.
